Who shoots? A look at officer race and police shooting.

Abstract

  1. Analyzed data for 4 yrs on 3,287 police officers who reported firing their weapons on duty. It was hypothesized that (1) Black and Hispanic Ss would have higher rates of involvement in police shootings than White Ss; and (2) much of the minority disproportion among on-duty shooters could be accounted for by racial differences in assignments and by their disproportionate presence in areas where the risk of shooting involvement is greatest. Results did indicate a relationship between Ss' race and police shootings, but apparently it was a spurious relationship in which many other variables intervened. The data do not clearly support the contention that White Ss had little regard for the lives of minority citizens. Analysis indicated that minority overrepresentation among police shooters was closely associated with racial patterns of assignment, socialization, and residence.
