Not just the usual cast of characteristics: Using personality to predict college performance and retention.

Abstract

  1. Examined the ability of the 3 personality characteristics of achievement, conscientiousness, and resiliency to predict college student performance and retention. Early in their 1st yr 844 students at a large, public US university completed the College Adjustment Inventory (L. W. Osher et al, 1995) concerning self-reported personality characteristics. Collected data included high-school GPA, Scholastic Assessment Test scores, and cumulative GPA earned during Ss' 1st academic year. Results show that conscientiousness was more predictive of college GPA than was high school GPA. Conscientiousness was associated with retention both directly and indirectly, whereas high school GPA, total SAT score, achievement, and resiliency showed no predictive value for college retention.
