Investigated the varying sensations which follow the cessation of a prolonged stimulation of the skin by means of pressure. Weights from 25-1000 g were applied to the backs of the S's hands for 5 sec-10 min. Records were made of the different sensations felt, after their removal. The method of introspection was used. A marked difference in Ss' power to discriminate the after-sensations was seen. The minimal time of stimulation which yields an after-sensation was 5 sec, with a pressure of 150 g. Erratic relations are found between the duration of stimulus and the length of the interval which elapsed before the after-sensation occurred. The intervals increased up to stimulations of about 3 min and then decreased. The duration of the after-sensation increased with the duration of stimulation. The longest duration of after-sensations was given by a pressure of 150-500 g. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
