Abstract

540 lower-level employees in 7 state and county government agencies indicated on a questionnaire which of 3 possible reasons was the most important cause of turnover in their agencies. Results suggest that employees with positive job attitudes are less likely to indicate that others left because of job dissatisfaction. This finding is consistent with both the ego-defensive and egocentric biases in attribution processes but not with the fundamental attribution error.
