We extend our multivariate model of prediction to another characteristic of treatment, perceptions of the psychosocial environment of the Edmonton Day Treatment Program (DTP). We consider empirical relationships among patient personality, treatment, and outcome variables. The treatment variable was a measure of the "total program characteristics" that bears directly on the milieu and systems approach employed in the DTP. We used the Community-Oriented Programs Environment Scale (COPES; Moos, 1974) to assess the perceived environment of the DTP. We considered variables based on the COPES as potential predictors of therapy outcome in conjunction with two patient personality variables, psychological mindedness and quality of object relations. We also consider the descriptive information provided by patient and staff COPES ratings relative to the norms for the measure and provide supportive evidence for the underlying factor structure of the COPES identified by other investigators. The sample consisted of DTP staff and 99 patients. The COPES ratings of the psychosocial environment of the DTP provided empirical validation of the clinical treatment philosophy of the program.
