Abstract

There are numerous theoretical perspectives on trauma response, including dissociative, biological, psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and psychobiological theories. All of these approaches have made contributions to our understanding of specific aspects of posttraumatic stress disorder. However, none has specifically and comprehensively considered the acute posttraumatic phase, and consequently, there is currently no well-developed theory of acute stress disorder (ASD). This chapter reviews several theoretical approaches that may contribute to an understanding of ASD. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
