In this chapter, we begin by reviewing mental health programs and policies of the 1960s and 1970s. Next, we focus on developments in public policy and services to the aged during this period. We then consider the impact of these systems on the older individual, using senile dementia and depression to illustrate the issues we have raised. Finally, we discuss the prospects for mental health and aging in the 1980s and beyond. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
