Abstract

In an attempt to understand the etiology of pathological gambling, I review the evidence suggesting a link between disordered gambling and some basic demographic variables. Investigators have evaluated the association of disordered gambling with several characteristics: younger age, minority ethnicity, lower socioeconomic class, single or divorced marital status, and male gender. For each potential risk factor, I first review general population surveys; then I detail evidence from individuals seeking treatment for pathological gambling. In the final section of this chapter, I synthesize data on gender and age differences in gambling. In this chapter I examine demographic risk factors using general population surveys.
