Abstract

At the first hypnotic session the aim is to give the patient confidence in his ability to enter the trance state. To achieve this aim the physician may execute the following steps in order: (1) encourage motivations that will lead to hypnosis; (2) remove as fully as possible misconceptions, fears, and resistances that oppose hypnosis; (3) give the patient a suggestibility test to demonstrate that he can follow suggestions; (4) encourage relaxation by a suggestive preparatory talk; (5) induce a trance; (6) deepen the trance; (7) awaken the patient; (8) discuss with him his reaction to hypnosis. This chapter examines and discusses each of the aforementioned steps in greater detail. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
