Abstract

It is difficult to obtain a clear outlook over the possibilities of psychotherapy (and psychanalysis) through a fragmentary presentation of some of its issues and lines of thought. Even if we should go through in detail everything which, during the past century can possibly be looked upon as falling within this sphere, and if we should pause at each one who has had anything to do with it, we should not even then be able fully to comprehend what it now means. And still less should we be able to construct for ourselves a clear idea of the present status of psychotherapy and of the purpose toward which it most deeply aims. It is necessary to see it all in wider historical connections. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
