Abstract

Whether group therapy alone is an adequate treatment procedure for delinquents is a question that cannot be categorically answered. As we developed our clinic program, we found that a number of the delinquents, as well as their parents, seemed to make considerable progress in the intake groups. We decided, therefore, to offer only group therapy to a few clients who seemed, on the basis of certain rough diagnostic criteria, to be able to utilize the group experience productively. Our criteria were chiefly the absence of acute mental illness and the apparent diminution of resistance in the group setting. A number of cases, including both parents and children, received only group therapy throughout their clinic contact. We are of the opinion that where this procedure was relevantly employed, good results were obtained. One case will be presented to illustrate the use of the group approach: Both the mother, Mrs. Foster, and her daughter, Florence (age 14), were members of continuing treatment groups.
