In this chapter, we consider variations in the termination process associated with four different orientations of therapy: interpersonal therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, and experiential therapy. The chapter is organized around the three termination outcomes of the general model, described in chapters 2 and 3. This chapter discusses how therapists working from these four therapy orientations approach the termination outcomes. Because the general model of termination that is described in this book is based on long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, a psychodynamic perspective on termination has been thoroughly described in the two preceding chapters and, thus, is not further developed here.
