Abstract

This chapter provides a report of an interview with Herbert Spencer which appeared in several New York newspapers on the morning of October 20, 1882. Hearing that Mr. Spencer had returned to New York in a somewhat improved condition of health, an intimate American friend obtained his consent to be questioned regarding his impressions of this country. Based on his observations, Spencer argues that, whatever difficulties they may have to surmount, and whatever tribulations they may have to pass through, the Americans may reasonably look forward to a time when they will have produced a civilization grander than any the world has known.
