Abstract

Man's survival depends upon his adaptation both to his geographical and to his social-cultural environments. We have already sketched the chief features of the latter. (See Chapter II.) Here we shall deal with the geographic factors. These are traditionally classified into those of (1) the atmosphere; (2) the water; (3) the earth's surface, soil, and rocks; and (4) the living plants and animals. Before we attempt to correlate these factors with man's social life, we must review some ancient and still popular notions about the relation of geography to social life.
