Abstract

This chapter is divided into three sections. The first section is respiration in the air. Topics include change produced in the air by respiration; carbonic acid; oxygen; nitrogen; and cold-blooded animals vs warm-blooded animals. The second section is respiration in the water. Topics include changes produced in the water by the respiration of fishes; and respiration of fishes by the skin and in the air. The third section is respiration of the embryo of animals, including birds and insects, and mammalia. Other topics include change produced in the blood of the fetus during its passage through the placenta; and liquor amnios as the function of respiration.
