Abstract

Many situations arise in which it would be desirable to employ a correlation technique in which the Pearson product-moments formula is, for one reason or another, not applicable. In this chapter we shall set forth several alternative procedures, each adapted to some particular type of situation. We discuss biserial correlation, tetrachoric correlation, tetrachoric r from widespread classes, biserial r from widespread classes, mean-square contingency correlation, correcting coefficients of correlation for broad categories, and quantitative variates with unequally spaced intervals.
