Abstract

What is going to happen to the relationship between therapist and patient, after all that has gone on? The final period may be one of very rich work. This chapter considers many of the ways treatment can and should be terminated in the most positive way. Of course, many kinds of termination are not being discussed here: for example, a patient "getting well" and leaving as an act of defiance, or as a defensive escape from the intimacy of the relationship; or a patient leaving his illness and symptoms with the therapist and never wanting to see him or think of him again, repository as he is of everything that is terrible and terrifying to the patient.
