Abstract

Although most personality and social psychologists acknowledge the influence of both dispositions and situations on behavior (Tracy, Robins, & Sherman, 2009), understanding and modeling the interplay between person characteristics and situation characteristics has been a continuing problem within the field. This chapter documents how theorists have approached the problem of person × situation interactions; it identifies the challenges that historically have inhibited theoretical developments in this area; and it describes how new methods, new constructs, and new quantitative tools have opened up new opportunities and new directions in modeling the interplay between persons and situations. Consistent with the theme this volume, this chapter focuses on critical issues and illustrative theorists and researchers rather than attempts a comprehensive review of the many theorists and researchers who have contributed to this topic.
