Abstract

Instinct is inherited behavior. It is that part of behavior with respect to which animals are born fully educated. It is automatic and instantaneous in action. It is common to all members of a species; in matters of vital importance all tend to act alike. This chapter discusses instinct in animals using butterflies, moths, birds, and caddisworms as examples. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
