In any attempt to study the processes of socializing children the old problem of heredity and environment is faced. It would be much simpler merely to describe the steps in learning, and to take for granted the possibility of learning; but if the aim of education is to be attained, the undertaking must be guided by a knowledge of the limits as well as of the possibilities of learning. In those respects in which human nature is fixed by heredity it cannot be modified by the environment; in those respects in which heredity connotes only latent capacities, appropriate environmental influences are necessary for normal development. It is, therefore, of importance to know just how far heredity pre-determines the behavior of an individual and in just what ways it makes possible the modifying of his behavior.
